A Backstage Look at the Oscars®

Behind the Scenes at the Oscars®, a photographic exhibition featuring unique images from the last four Academy Awards® Presentations, will go on display at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences beginning January 15, 1998. Like all exhibitions at the Academy, Behind the Scenes will be free and open to the public.

All 55 color photos in Behind the Scenes were taken by Lara Jo Regan, an award-winning photojournalist who, for ther last four years, has been on assignment at the Academy Awards for Premiere magazine. With the cooperation of the Academy and the telecasts' producers, Regan has enjoyed unrivaled access at events leading up to the Academy Awards Presentations and at the Oscar ceremonies themselves. The majority of the images in the exhibition have never been seen by the public, while others have been featured in Premiere's annual Academy Awards special issue.

Regan's work in Behind the Scenes at the Oscars® combines photojournalism techniques with fine art aesthetics. The photographs reveal the humour, humanity and unexpected beauty of what goes on behind the scenes at the world's most watched televised event. With images of rehearsal rooms and dressing rooms, kitchens and the show's production control room, not to mention a myriad of movie stars navigating film's biggest night, Regan has attempted to capture the wide range of Oscar-related activities and preparations.
