As the world was gripped by uncertainty and war clouds started to build over Europe, the Academy Awards entered their second decade.

The 11th ceremony, which had no official host, took place at the Biltmore Hotel. The nominations included the first foreign language film to be nominated for Best Picture, Grand Illusion.
