Changes were afoot for Hollywood’s biggest night in its 33rd year. For starters, it was no longer in Hollywood.

With the RKO Pantages unavailable, the Academy needed to find a place big enough for all the nominees and guests. They found that place in nearby Santa Monica at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. This venue was Oscar®’s home until 1969.

Another change had ABC now broadcasting the show, a change that would remain in place through 1970.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • The Apartment: 10
  • The Alamo: 7
  • Sons and Lovers: 7
  • Pepe: 7
  • Spartacus: 6
  • Never on Sunday: 5
  • The Facts of Life: 5
  • The Sundowners: 5
  • Elmer Gantry: 5
