Bob Hope once again hosted, taking the reigns of the 39th Academy Awards on Monday, April 10th, 1967.

He almost didn’t have a TV show to host. The American Federation of Radio-TV Artists (AFTRA) was on strike and the broadcast was almost canceled until the strike was settled just over two hours before the telecast began.

With the proceedings underway, the film adaptation of the stage success A Man for All Seasons won six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Fred Zinnemann) and a Best Actor for Paul Scofield.

The intense drama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? took home five awards including Best Actress for Elizabeth Taylor and Supporting Actress for Sandy Dennis. A bruised-up Walter Matthau, who had been in a cycling accident, took home Best Supporting Actor for The Fortune Cookie.

Trivia for the night: Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave were the first sisters to both be nominated as Best Actress in the same year since Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine in 1941.
