The third Academy Awards ceremony was hosted by matinee idol Conrad Nagel, a founding member of both the Academy and the Screen Actors Guild. Held on November 5, 1930, the ceremony once again took place at the Ambassador Hotel.

Films released between August 1st, 1929 and July 31st, 1930 were eligible for consideration.

While the previous results were decided by a group of five Academy judges, the third ceremony marked the first time that the nominations and winners were voted on by the whole Academy membership.
