Several changes were in store for the 40th Academy Awards. The telecast was saying goodbye to its home of the last few years, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The next year would see the show back in Los Angeles and in a new home.

As color movies were now the norm, the art direction, cinematography and costume design nominations were now no longer split into color and black and white categories.

And a serious event would move the scheduled date of the ceremony for only the second time in its history.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • Bonnie and Clyde: 10
  • Guess Who's Coming to Dinner: 10
  • Doctor Dolittle: 9
  • Thoroughly Modern Millie: 7
  • In the Heat of the Night: 7
  • The Graduate: 7
  • Camelot: 5
