Heading towards the 43rd Academy Awards, the biopic Patton was one of the two top nominated films, tying Airport with 10 nominations.

One of those nominees, George C. Scott, felt that the Oscars were a “meat parade” and wanted nothing to do with the process. He asked that his nomination be removed but the Academy did not comply. The then-President of the Academy, Daniel Taradash, explained that “Nominations and awards are voted for achievements as they appear on the screen; therefore a person responsible for the achievement cannot decline the nomination after it is voted. Actually, Mr. Scott is not involved. It is his performance in Patton which is involved.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • Airport: 10
  • Patton: 10
  • Love Story: 7
  • Tora! Tora! Tora!: 5
  • M*A*S*H: 5
