Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Charlton Heston and Rock Hudson were the hosts for the 45th Academy Awards which were scheduled for March 27th, 1973.

Cabaret and The Godfather led the nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.

One interesting note was the Best Music (Original Dramatic Score) nomination of Charles Chaplin, Raymond Rasch and Larry Russell for Limelight. The film had been released in 1952, but had not played in Los Angeles, a requirement for nomination. A re-release in 1972 suddenly made it eligible.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • The Godfather: 11
  • Cabaret: 10
  • The Poseidon Adventure: 8
  • Lady Sings the Blues: 5
