As Hollywood approached Oscar night the buzz once again turned to an imagined snub of Barbra Streisand. Her latest directorial effort, The Prince of Tides had been nominated in seven categories but Streisand’s name was nowhere to be found in the list of nominated directors. Already nominated for a Directors Guild award, people wondered if the Academy voters thought the film directed itself.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • Bugsy: 10
  • JFK: 8
  • The Prince of Tides: 7
  • The Silence of the Lambs: 7
  • Beauty and the Beast: 6
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day: 6
  • Thelma & Louise: 6
  • Hook: 5
  • The Fisher King: 5
