Oscar®-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg will return to host the 71st Academy Awards®.

"Whoopi is astonishing," said telecast producer Gil Cates. "When I asked her to host her first Oscar telecast (the 66th), she thoroughly surprised and entertained the audience. I think it is wonderful that she has agreed to return to host the 71st Academy Awards. The audience adores Whoopi and that affection, plus Whoopi's extraordinary talent, makes her a terrific host for the show."

This will be the third time that Goldberg has hosted the Oscar telecast. Each of her previous hosting performances - at the 66th and 68th Academy Awards - garnered the actress Emmy nominations.

"I am thrilled to escort Oscar into the new millennium," said Goldberg. "Who would have thought that I would be hosting the last Oscar telecast of the century? It's a huge deal."

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 1998 will be presented on Sunday, March 21, 1999, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center of Los Angeles County.
