June 1, 1999 - Most people think that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is just about tuxedos, evening gowns and that lil' golden guy named Oscar®. That sells the great organization short. Throughout the year the Academy hosts events and programs designed to foster educational activities between the professional film community and the public-at-large. Now they're spreading their assistance a little further.
Four U. S. film festivals will benefit from the first grants made by the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from a newly-established Film Festival Fund.
Receiving the first Academy Foundation Festival Grants were:
- Chicago International Film Festival $50,000
- New York Film Festival $50,000
- Telluride Film Festival $50,000
- New York International Children's Film Festival $10,000
Though the grants, which will total $250,000 a year, can be used for general festival purposes, the Academy hopes that the funds will be used to make the events more accessible to the general public.
