Welcome to Digital Hit's coverage of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
For many people turning 65 is a cause for celebration and reflection. That won't be the case for this year's Golden Globes.
Faced by the prospect of striking Writers Guild of America picket lines and a Screen Actors Guild boycott, the HFPA had to make a tough decision. The usual glitzy champagne dinner and ceremony was cancelled and replaced by a press conference to be hosted by NBC, which has the rights to air the ceremony. That's when the real drama began.
Behind the scenes, Dick Clark Productions, who usually produce the telecast, said NBC wasn't offering a license fee for a clip package of previous ceremonies. NBC said their news division was producing the new telecast and they don't pay for clips. Journalistic pundits questioned the ethics of a "press conference" where only one network had the right to first broadcast. So finally, the HFPA pulled the plug on NBC's exclusivity. Any network who wanted to carry the press conference announcing the winnners, could.
CNN, E!, and the TV Guide network all announced plans to cover the press conference live. Now that it was a bona fide press conference, the WGA said it wasn't a struck production and they wouldn't picket. SAG said members could attend if they wanted to. There's buzz that the HFPA, Dick Clark Productions and NBC might battle each other with lawsuits. And you thought the real drama was on stage.
