42nd Annual Grammy® Award Winners

Some of the awards are handed out before the show goes to air. Some of the winners so far include Santana, who has won Rock Duo/Group w/Vocal, Pop Collaboration w/Vocals and Pop Instrumental Performance.

Will Smith opened the show with a live performance.

The host for the show was Rosie O'Donnell. She made several cracks about celebrities in the news including Sean Combs and Whitney Houston.

The first presenters were David Duchovny and Jennifer Lopez, who was in a barely-there dress. The presented the Best R&B Album to TLC for Fanmail.

The next live performance (fourteen to go...) was by the Dixie Chicks.

The next presenters were Ray Romano, Kevin James and Martina McBride. They presented the Best Country Album to the Dixie Chicks for their album Fly.

The next big live performance of the night was a tribute to Latin music that featured Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin and members of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Mary J. Blige and 'N Sync presented the award for Best Male Pop Vocal to a very surprised Sting.

Whitney Houston was the next live performer. Rosie introduced her as a "...big fan of the Doobies".

Jamie Foxx, Busta Rhymes and Jane Krakowski were the next presenters. They gave the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal to Whitney Houston. Whitney thanked both God and Jesus. Apparently the Holy Ghost didn't work on her album. Rosie commented that she was sure that God was busy doing other things besides helping Whitney win.

The Backstreet Boys were up next to sing a tribute to Male Vocal Groups which they ended with one of their own songs.

Faith Hill was the next live performer. Have you noticed yet that the huge majority of categories were handed out before the telecast? The show's become one big concert interspersed with the odd trophy.

Clint Black, Lisa Hartman Black and Ray Benson were the next presenters. The winner of Best Female Country Vocal was Shania Twain. Clint joked she wasn't there because she was having her belly waxed.

TLC were up next to perform Unpretty and No Scrubs.

The next presenters were Macy Gray, Andy Williams and Phil Collins. They presented the Song of the Year to Itaal Shur and Rob Thomas for writing Santana's Smooth.

Sting performed next.

The Record of the Year trophy was presented by Vince Gill, Gloria Estefan and Neil Diamond. The winner was Smooth by Santana Featuring Rob Thomas.

Rosie then introduced Kid Rock, whose performance she said answered her prayers "for a band that combined rap, heavy metal and a foul-mouthed midget."

Shirley Manson and Michael Clarke Duncan presented the award for Best Rap Duo or Group to The Roots Featuring Erykah Badu.

Britney Spears was the next performer. Rosie joked that compared to her AMA outfit, Britney was wearing an Amish frock this evening.

Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge and Sarah McLachlan presented the Best New Artist award to an exceedingly surprised Christina Aguilera. Christina said she really believed she had no chance of winning.

The next live performance was by a group of fantastic musicians in their early teens that were introduced by the President of the Recording Academy, Michael Greene.

The Lifetime Achievement honors went to Harry Belafonte, Woody Guthrie, John Lee Hooker, Mitch Miller and Willie Nelson. The Trustee Award was given to Phil Spector and Clive Davis.

Billy Joel then came out to introduce the Grammy Legend Award winner to Sir Elton John. He said they not only played piano, wrote and sang, but they had both been taken to the cleaners by former managers an experience he wished they didn't have in common.

Elton then performed with the Backstreet Boys.

We had a couple of live performances next: Three fiddlers and a bass (Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Sam Bush, and Mike Marshall) followed by a jazz jam by George Benson, Diana Krall and Erykah Badu.

Finally the best moment of the evening, a live performance of Smoothby Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas which received a standing ovation.

Bob Dylan and Lauryn Hill presented the last award of the night, the Grammy for Album of the Year to Santana's Supernatural. Carlos said that music is the vehicle for healing. Clive Davis said that Carlos was an inspiration to musicians, saying that he not only shows how long a career can last, but also how long it can soar.
