Signs beats triple XXX

The dog days of summer can lead to some surprises over the weekends.

XXX, which topped the last two weak weekends, was bumped out of the top spot by M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs, which took in $14.28 million. The Vin Diesel actioner took in $13.25 million.

New openers didn’t excite filmgoers. The Matthew Perry/Elizabeth Hurley flick Serving Sara, which was savaged by critics, opened at number 6 with $5.7 million. The Wesley Snipes/Ving Rhames boxing film Undisputed didn’t knock anyone out in eight spot with $4.5 million, and Al Pacino’s comedy Simone had just $3.8 million at No. 9.
