Spidey takes a second weekend

Safe from the Attack of the Clones, which opens Thursday, Spider-Man was able to continue its reign atop the weekend box office, pulling in an estimated $72 million and crossing the $200 million mark in just 9 days.

Ironically, the previous record of thirteen days was held by The Phantom Menace, so it’ll be interesting to see how fast the latest Star Wars flick takes to reach that mark.

Though 60% of the tix sold this weekend were for the web-spinning teen, some people actually went to see other movies too. The new Richard Gere/Diane Lane flick, Unfaithful debuted at #2 with a take of roughly $14.2 million (which is probably what the spidey-goers spent on popcorn). The third spot went to the relatively low-budget The New Guy which scored about $9.5 million.

The top five was rounded out by The Scorpion King which took in another $4.4 million in its fourth weekend and Changing Lanes with $3.5 million.
