Da Vinci Code tops weekend

Despite tepid reviews and the odd protest, audiences flocked to The Da Vinci Code this weekend, giving the Tom Hanks vehicle a $77 million opening.

DreamWorks Animation’s Over the Hedge, which feature the voice talents of Bruce Willis and Garry Shandling, opened in second with $38.4 million, which is equally amazing since that’s only $10 million short of M:I3’s overhyped opening.

Speaking of Mission: Impossible III, the film’s third weekend brough in another $11.3 million, bring its three week North American total to $103.5 million.

Meanwhile, Poseidon and RV rounded out the top five with $9.2 million and $5 million respectively.
