Moviegoers spend Xmas on island

Tom Hanks didn’t get voted off the island as moviegoers filled his stocking with an estimated $40.5 million and the number one spot for his new movie Cast Away.

Though other movie faves like Mel Gibson, Nicolas Cage, Sandra Bullock and Jim Carrey all had movies in the theaters, Hanks’ flick took in more holiday moolah than the 2nd and 3rd films combined.

Mel Gibson’s What Women Want dropped to number 2, with roughly $21.5 million, while Nic Cage’s The Family Man was third with $15.2 million.

Jim Carrey’s Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas was in fourth with $15 million but the Grinch has still stolen the year’s number one spot from Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 2.

The top five was rounded out by Sandra Bullock’s Miss Congeniality, which also features Michael Caine and Benjamin Bratt.
