Actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced Thursday to three years for failing to file income taxes. The actor, who follows a groups that believes income taxes are illegal, hadn’t file a return since 1998. Just hours before the sentence was handed down, Snipes surprised prosecutors by handing over checks totaling $5 million.

In a prepared statement, Snipes said that, “I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance.”
