Oscar®, you look so young...it's hard to believe that you're seventy-five.
We get up early, so you don't have to...
The nominations for the 75th Annual Academy Awards® were announced at 8:30am ET on February 11th, 2003. The announcement was made by Oscar®-winning actress Marissa Tomei and the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Frank Pierson.
The big surprise: no nod for Best Actor for Richard Gere.
Still, there were some happy people watching the nominations today. Actor Michael Caine, who received a Best Actor nod for The Quiet American, said "I am absolutely delighted. It is completely unexpected after not getting a SAG nomination, so I couldn't be happier." Director Martin Scorsese, who fought and worked long and hard to get Gangs of New York made, said that "I'm very happy to be nominated by the members of the Academy for my work and particularly happy for my collaborators. It was a difficult movie to make, one I have dreamed of for several decades, so this recognition means a great deal to me." His star, actor Daniel Day-Lewis was having a very good day too, saying "It's very beautiful here in Ireland and this has made my day."
