Weekend not good for newbies

Aug 26, 2003 by Ian Evans

The dog days of summer weren’t good to the new releases last weekend according to final figures released by the studios.

The number one film this weekend was the second week of Freddy vs. Jason, which took in $13.2 million, a haul that was only 37% of its opening. In its third week, S.W.A.T., which stars Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson, added another $10.6 million for second place.

The relatively low-budget Open Range rounded up another $9.5 million and the top spot, while Freaky Friday continued amusing families with $9.3 million. The only new film to crack the top five this week, Jackie Chan’s The Medallion, took home $8.1 million.

Showing that audiences are probably sick and tired of all the Demi Moore stories, Ashton Kutcher’s new flick, My Boss’s Daughter hit number ten with $4.8 million. Meanwhile, way, way down the list, Marci X took in only $810,000 in its opening weekend, a figure only $142,000 better than Gigli’s second week. Lisa Kudrow may want to see if Matt LeBlanc needs a co-star on his new sitcom.
