Shrek 2 melts the ice

While Americans observed their Memorial Day holiday, Shrek 2 celebrated its hold on the top spot for a second week. According to weekend estimates, Shrek 2 pulled in $92.2 million over the holiday weekend. This pulled it past the new ice age actioner The Day After Tomorrow, which opened with $86 million and mixed reviews.

These numbers give Shrek 2 the best Memorial Day weekend gross title over The Lost World: Jurassic Park’s 1997 $90.2 million weekend.

You have to look a long way down to find the weekend haul for the third place film, as Troy added another $15 million. Meanwhile, Kate Hudson’s Raising Helen opened with $14 million. Soul Plane’s $7 million rounded out the top five.
