The 24th People's Choice Awards

The 24th Annual People's Choice Awards, sponsored by Procter & Gamble, took place on January 11th, 1998 and were the first big awards broadcast of the new year. Hosted by comedian Ray Romano and multi-talented singer Reba McEntire, the show featured a special presentation to Whoopi Goldberg. She went home with the People's Choice Special Tribute Award, whose previous recipients have included Michael Douglas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Aaron Spelling, and last year's honoree, Rob Reiner.

The People's Choice Awards are unique as they are chosen by The Gallup Organization using a representative sampling of Americans. While other major entertainment awards are based on nominations from peer-group associations or industry insiders, the People's Choice Awards have no nominees. The people polled can vote for their favourite actors and actresses, television shows, singers and movies. The results are tallied and the awards are then given out. And the winners for 1998 are:
