Stanley Kubrick, the acclaimed writer/director, died Sunday, March 7th, 1999 at his home north of London, England. He was 70.

Kubrick made less than twenty films, yet is one of the most influential directors of all time. Of course when a career includes such masterpieces as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb and A Clockwork Orange that influence is well-earned.

Kubrick was famous for his precise directing and his films often took several years from concept to completion. He was against doing 70 takes of one scene until he got it just right. His last film, the Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman vehicle Eyes Wide Shut, took over 15 months to shoot and Kubrick even brought actors back again for several more weeks for reshoots of scenes he didn’t think were working. That film had a release date of July 16, 1999.
