The 57th Annual Academy Awards were led by the eleven nominations each held by Amadeus and A Passage to India.

There were many criticisms about the length of the previous year’s ceremony. Jack Lemmon was tapped to host what the Academy hoped would be a more streamlined show, but they still only managed to get it down about 30 minutes to three hours and ten minutes.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • Amadeus: 11
  • A Passage to India: 11
  • Places in the Heart: 7
  • The Killing Fields: 7
  • 2010: 5
