The 60th Annual Academy Awards took place during a strike by the Writers Guild of America, which made for an interesting night as new material for the April 11th, 1988 could not be written after the strike was called on March 7th.

Looking for more seats and a bigger audience for it sixtieth edition, the Academy also moved the awards to the Shrine Auditorium for the first time in 40 years.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • The Last Emperor: 9
  • Broadcast News: 7
  • Fatal Attraction: 6
  • Empire of the Sun: 6
  • Moonstruck: 6
  • Hope and Glory: 5
