38th Annual American Music Awards (2010)

Welcome to Digital Hit Entertainment's coverage of the 2010 American Music Awards.

8:00 PM

The ceremony starts off with Rihanna singing a mix of "Love the Way You Lie", "What's My Name" and "Only Girl."

8:08 PM

Heidi Klum's out first to present the first award of the evening, Favorite Soul/R&B Album. And the American Music Award goes to Usher, who runs through a laundry list of names he wants to thank.

8:15 PM

Jenny McCarthy and John Legend team up to present Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group. And the American Music Award goes to The Black Eyed Peas.

8:17 PM

Eric Stonestreet and Rico Rodriguez, from Modern Family, introduce a performance by Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. So far the show seems flat. No real energy or excitement.

8:23 PM

Miley Cyrus performs.

8:31 PM

We get a performance by Sean Comb's new group, Diddy - Dirty Money

8:35 PM

Jessica Alba continues the lack of energy at the AMA's as she presents Favorite Female Country Artist to Taylor Swift. She thanks her fans for understanding her.

8:36 PM

Samuel L. Jackson introduces a performance by Kid Rock. If anyone was expecting him to raise the energy level, his soulful song about Detroit was good but didn't get the audience above flatline.

8:47 PM

Christina Milian and Johnny Weir present Favorite Latin Music Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Shakira, who isn't there. She's anywhere else and that's gotta be more fun than this.

8:49 PM

The Black Eyed Peas perform their new song, which sounds a lot like their past few.

The production of the show tonight seems like it was done by very bored interns. It's like they knew nobody was going to care.

8:57 PM

Newlywed Katy Perry performs next.

9:02 PM

Nicky Manaj, Taio Cruz and Trey Songz present the nominees for Favorite R&B Female Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Rihanna.

9:05 PM

Willow Smith introduces a performance by Justin Bieber. The energy level's still down. Even the Bieber tries to be all serious and performs with a gospel choir.

9:13 PM

Mandy Moore and Shery Crowe are presenting Favorite Country Male Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Brad Paisley.

9:16 PM

Time for Bon Jovi. They go through a lacklustre medley of their hits. Dang, what's in the air at the Nokia? Nobody has energy.

9:28 PM

Natasha Bedingfield gets ready to introduce the winner of the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist Award. And the American Music Award goes to Justin Bieber. Apparently God drove Justin to the awards because he thanked him for getting him here.

9:30 PM

Kelly Osbourne introduces a performance by Pink.

9:41 PM

And now a performance by Ne-Yo. This is followed by a song from Taylor Swift.

9:51 PM

Keri Hilson and Julianne Hough are presenting Pop/Rock Male Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Justin Bieber. He says he's been lsitening to fellow nominee Eminem since he was three. Which was last week.

9:58 PM

Christina Aguilera sings a song from her new movie Burlesque.

10:03 PM

Castle's Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion are presenting Favorite Country Band, Duo or Group. And the American Music Award goes to Lady Antebellum.

10:09 PM

Usher performs with Swedish House Mafia.

10:13 PM

Mike Posner and Avril Lavigne (didn't she used to have a career?) are presenting Alternaive Rock. And the American Music Award goes to Muse.

10:15 PM

Train performs. Lead singer Patrick Monahan wears a questionable pair of sparkly jeans.

10:24 PM

The Band Perry heads out to present Adult Contemporary. And the American Music Award goes to Michael Buble. "God I love winning things!"

10:26 PM

Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz present a performance by Ke$ha.

10:36 PM

Santana performs with Gavin Rossdale. So lemme guess this straight. Most energetic performance of the night is when a guitarist born in 1947 schools everyone.

10:41 PM

Lady Antebellum present Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Usher.

10:49 PM

Ryan Seacrest, purveyor of so much bad TV, presents Artist of the Year. And the American Music Award goes to Justin Bieber. He invites his mentor, Usher, to join him on stage.

10:52 PM

"Two of the greatest groups of all time" -- the Stones and the Beatles? Nope, apparently they meant New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys. The two boy bands mash-up their songs.

11:03 PM

The show's over. A bit of a trainwreck tonight. With the exception of Santana and Pink, most of the acts just appeared to be phoning in their performances.
