Roman Polanski won the Cannes film festival’s coveted Palme d’Or on Sunday for The Pianist, a film that follows one man’s survival in WWII’s Warsaw ghetto.

First-time winner Polanksi said, “I am honored and moved to receive this prestigious prize for a film which represents Poland.”
