8:00 pm

Janelle Monáe starts off the show entering through Mr. Rogers’ and sings “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” before launching into a song about the Oscars. She’s joined by Billy Porter and a stage full of dancers.

8:06 pm

Steve Martin and Chris Rock, two former hosts, are out next. “We’ve both hosted the Oscars and this is such an incredible demotion,” says Martin.

“Mahershala Ali has two Oscars,” says Rock. “Do you know what that means when the cops pull him over? Nothing.”

“Ford v. Ferrari is nominated tonight,” says Rock. “I have a Ford and a Ferrari. Not even close. It’s like Halle Berry versus gum disease.”

They then introduce Regina King to present Best Supporting Actor. And the Oscar goes to Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

Beanie Feldstein introduces Mindy Kaling, who in turn introduces the nominees for Animated Feature. And the Oscar goes to Josh Cooley, Mark Nielsen and Jonas Rivera for Toy Story 4.

Mindy then hands out the hardware for Animated Short Film. And the Oscar goes to Hair Love and Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver.

8:27 pm

Josh Gad, from Frozen II, talks about the dubbed Elsa’s from around the world. “For example,” he says, “the Canadian Elsa is basically the same except it has health care.” He then introduces a performance of the nominated song by Idina Menzel and several of the worldwide Elsa voices.

Kelly Marie Tran introduces Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves. After joking about their work together on Something’s Gotta Give, they present Writing (Original Screenplay). And the Oscar goes to Parasite’s Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won.

Natalie Portman and Timothée Chalamet, who apparently is dressed like a parking valet, present Writing (Adapted Screenplay). And the Oscar goes to Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit.

Shia LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen introduce the nominees for Short Film (Live Action). And the Oscar goes to The Neighbors’ Window and Marshall Curry.

8:53 pm

Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig say they’re upset about something, but then admit they were acting as there are a lot of directors in the room and they want to show their dramatic range. They then present Production Design. And the Oscar goes to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’s Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh.

Wiig and Rudolph present Costume Design, but not before singing a medley of clothes-related lines. And the Oscar goes to Jacqueline Durran for Little Women.

Chrissy Metz sings the song “I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough.

we see a series of clips about the power of documentaries. Mark Ruffalo then introduces the nominees for Documentary Feature. And the Oscar goes to Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert and Jeff Reichert for American Factory.

Ruffalo then presents Documentary (Short Subject). And the Oscar goes to Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)’s Carol Dysinger and Elena Andreicheva.

9:16 pm

Mahershala Ali is here to present Best Supporting Actress. And the Oscar goes to Laura Dern for Marriage Story. She pays tribute to her acting parents, Diane LAdd and Bruce Dern.

9:25 pm

Anthony Ramos, from Hamilton, intoduces Lin-Manuel Miranda. He’s here to intoduce a clip package about movie songs. It ends with a clip from 8 Mile, which transitions into a live performance by Eminem. He gets a standing ovation at the end.

Salma Hayek and Oscar Isaac are presenting Sound Editing. And the Oscar goes to Donald Sylvester for Ford v Ferrari.

Oscar and Salma then proceed to present Sound Mixing. And the Oscar goes to Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for 1917.

Randy Newman performs “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4.

Utkarsh Ambudkar recaps the show in rap before introducing Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell. They talk about the importance of cinematographers, but they get their job completely wrong. They then present Cinematography. And the Oscar goes to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Will and Julia then present Film Editing, but first attack editors who have cut them out of various projects. And the Oscar goes to Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland for Ford v Ferrari.

Academy President David Rubin talks about the soon-to-open Academy Museum. He then introduces Tom Hanks who announces the museum will open on December 14th.

Zazie Beetz talks to conductor Ricky Miner before introducing Cynthia Erivo, singing “Stand Up” from Harriet.

James Corden and Rebel Wilson, dressed as cats. They’re presenting Visual Effects. And the Oscar goes to Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler and Dominic Tuohy for 1917.

Ray Romano and Sandra Oh are tasked with presenting Makeup and Hairstyling. Romano jokes that before hair and makeup he’s actually Charlize Theron. And the Oscar goes to Bombshell’s Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker.

10:23 pm

Penélope Cruz introduces a clip package about international films. She then presents the Academy Award for International Feature Film. And the Oscar goes to South Korea’s Parasite. Director Bong Joon Ho gets a standing ovation.

Elton John performs “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman. Interesting to see there’s teleprompter built in to the piano top.

10:36 pm

Taika Waititi comes out to acknowldege the Academy Awards are presented on ancestral native lands. He then discusses the the recipients of the Governors Awards that were presented in November. He then introduces Sigourney Weaver, Brie Larson and Gal Gadot. They say that all women are superheroes before introducing female conductor Eímear Noone to lead the playing of the Original Score nominees. It’s the first time in 92 years that a woman has conducted a performance at the Oscars.

The trio then present the Original Score Oscar. And the Oscar goes to Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker.

Brie, Sigourney and Gal then present Original Song. And the Oscar goes to Rocketman’s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

Spike Lee, whose outfit pays tribute to Kobe Bryant, is presenting Best Director, an award he won last year. And the Oscar goes to Bong Joon Ho for Parasite. He gets a standing ovation. He mentions a quote that was very important to him in film school and that quote was from fellow nominee Martin Scorsese. He also pays tribute to nominee Quentin Tarantino who always showed him support.

Steven Spielberg now introduces the In Memoriam segment, the music is “Ysterday” which is performed by Billie Eilish and Finneas.

George MacKay introduces Olivia Colman, who is here to present Best Actor. And the Oscar goes to Joaquin Phoenix. He ends his emotional speech with a lyric his late brother wrote.

Rami Malek introduces the nominees for Best Actress. And the Oscar goes to Renée Zellweger for her great performance in Judy. Her speech feels like it needs an intermission.

11:21 pm

Jane Fonda is here to present the night’s final award, Best Picture. And the Oscar goes to Parasite. It’s the first time an non-English language film has won Best Picture. They go to cut off one of the people on stage but the audience protests, chanting “Up” to get the show producers to put the lights back up.
