27th Annual American Music Awards

The 27th Annual American Music Awards took place on January 17th. Below is the live coverage we did that night.

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of the 27th Annual American Music Awards, hosted by Norm MacDonald.

The show opened with Mariah Carey and rappers Joe and Nas.

Host Norm MacDonald joked that this will be three hours of ABC programming without Regis and also cracked that it was hard to find a seat-filler for Jennifer Lopez.

The first presenters were Kelsey Grammer and Melissa Etheridge, who presented the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Album. The winner was rock legend Santana, beating out the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. Carlos brought Clive Davis up on stage to share the award with him.

Well, we've already rec'd our first email complaining about Norm. What do you think? Email us.

Garth Brooks, or is that his pal Chris Gaines, accepted the award for Best Country Album from presenters SheDaisy.

'N Sync were the next musical performers.

Deborah Cox and Tommy Lee were on hand to present the statuette for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist. The winner was DMX.

Country duo Brooks & Dunn performed next.

Dharma & Greg's Thomas Gibson and Carmen Electra came out to present the Best New Pop Artist Award. It was amazing to see that the cleavage of winner Britney Spear's outfit was actually deeper than Ms. Electra's.

Donny & Marie came out to announce that Decade winners were voted on the Internet. The results will be announced throughout the evening. The winner of the 50's vote was Elvis Presley.

LFO came out to introduce the next performer, Christina Aguilera. Her outfit looked positively conservative next to Britney...that is until she ripped the skirt off.

The winner of the Favorite Country Band, Duo, or Group were fresh off the stage, as Brooks & Dunn won the award.

The Eurythmics performed next. It's great to see them back together again.

Well, it's one hour down and two to go. The winner of the Country New Artist Award went to Montgomery Gentry. They were quite touched by the award saying it was truly unexpected.

Enrique Iglesias performed next. His performance was unique because he sang from a platform up in the balcony, where the fans sit.

Rapper DMX and Mel C. aka Sport Spice handed out the trophy for Favorite Soul/R&B Band, Duo or Group to TLC. TLC were on tour and were not there to pick up the award.

The Internet voters chose The Beatles as the winners of the Sixties Decade Award. Then Dru Hill introduced a performance by Dr. Dre and Eminem.

Andy Garcia came out to present the Merit Award to Gloria Estefan. They showed a video retrospective of her life and career.

Shania Twain then won the Favorite Female Country Artist. This was followed by a live performance by Beck.

Stevie Wonder won the Internet vote for 70s Artist. Britney Spears and Tal Bachman came out to present Favorite Band, Duo or Group to the Backstreet Boys. Or in this case Backstreet Boy, as only Howie D. was there.

Savage Garden performed a terribly unsavage song next. Shania Twain then won the Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist.

Lou Bega introduced a live performance by Eve and Faith Evans.

Queen Latifah and Christopher "Kid" Reid handed the Soul/R&B New Artist to Tyrese.

Olivia Newton-John then handed out the Award of Achievement to Mariah Carey. She dedicated the award to two young girls from the Make-A-Wish Foundation that were there as her guests.

Michael Jackson won the Internet vote for the 80's. Rick Schroeder and Amy Grant then presented the Favorite Latin Artist award to Ricky Martin. Martin was on tour and was not at the show. This was followed up by a live performance by Creed.

Diana Ross then came out to do a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

The 90's Artist of the Decade was presented to Garth Brooks. He made a point of thanking his wife, saying the last decade was due to "God and you."

This was followed by a performance by Brian McKnight.

Jane Leeves and the WCW's Goldberg presented the award for Favorite Soul/R&B album to Lauryn Hill for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Jessica Simpson, Tyrese and Julio Iglesias came out to present the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Artist to R. Kelly, who rapped his acceptance.

Christina Applegate then introduced a performance by Lenny Kravitz. This was followed by the award for the Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist, which was won by Lauryn Hill.

Comedians Bill Maher and Caroline Rae presented the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male to Will Smith.

The last award of the evening was Favorite Male Country Artist. Reba McEntire presented the award to Garth Brooks.
