35th Annual American Music Awards (2007)

Welcome to our coverage of the 2007 American Music Awards ceremony. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the awards were presented on November 18th, 2007. Here's our coverage of the night.

8:00 PM ET

Fergie and Will.i.am open the show with "Fergalicious", she then sings on her own, including her song "Big Girls Don't Cry (Personal)."

8:06 PM ET

Will.i.am's back on his own now...singing "Heartbreaker."

8:09 PM ET

And now a performance by Nicole Scherzinger...we're 9 minutes in and I'm yawning. Nicole tries to get the audience to wave their arms in the air (like they just don't care, I suppose) and well, they don't care, because few people join in.

8:14 PM ET

Host Jimmy Kimmel is here, his fourth time hosting. He mentions that as a WGA member, he's on strike, so instead of jokes, he'll dance. He grabs Idol contestants Kellie Pickler and Jordin Sparks to do the Soulja Boy dance. They're joined onstage by Soulja Boy.

8:17 PM ET

Former Idol Carrie Underwood is presenting tonight's first award, Favorite Breakthrough Artist. And the American Music Award goes to the band Daughtry, led by another Idol contestant Chris Daughtry.

8:24 PM ET

Christina Applegate and James Blunt stroll out and waste no time in presenting Country - Favorite Band, Duo or Group. And the American Music Award goes to Rascal Flatts.

8:26 PM ET

One Republic are here to present a performance by Avril Lavigne. Half an hour in and the show still has no energy.

8:30 PM ET

Announced as "America's #1 Band", it's a performance by Rascal Flatts.

8:39 PM ET

And now "America's busiest host" Ryan Seacrest introduces a performance by Maroon 5. 39 minutes in and we're still drifting without a kickass performance.

8:43 PM ET

Ashanti's out next to present Favorite Soul Male R&B Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Akon. "It's the first one baby!" He then says he'll give it to T-Pain. Gripping TV people...

8:50 PM ET

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks announces teen idols the Jonas Brothers as a plethora of screaming girls run down to the front of the stage.

8:53 PM ET

Fabolous and Taylor Swift are presenting Pop/Rock - Favorite Male Artist. I've heard of neither of these people, which only shows how fragmented the industry is. And the American Music Award goes to Justin Timberlake, who's not there and accepts via tape.

8:55 PM ET

Jimmy Kimmel sitting in the audience with his arm around Celine Dion. Kid Rock approaches him and tells him to get out of his seat, which results in Kid Rock punching Kimmel. We urgently request that the writers and producers settle their strike, not that awards shows are usually hallmarks of great writing.

9:00 PM ET

Jimmy says he and Kid have made up and will soon release a sex tape. This is followed by Kellie Pickler and Matt Dallas presenting Best Soundtrack. And the American Music Award goes to High School Musical 2. The carefully crafted Disney 'bots that inhabit the cast accept the award.

9:02 PM ET

Taye Diggs introduces a performance by Rihanna.

9:13 PM ET

Two of the cast from Grey's Anatomy, Chyler Leigh and Justin Chambers , present the award for Favorite Country Female Artists. And the American Music Award goes to Carrie Underwood. It's funny. Unlike Kelly Clarkson, I keep forgetting Underwood's an Idol winner.

9:14 PM ET

The Anatomy duo intro a performance by Sugarland, who do a country version of Beyoncé's "Irreplacable". She joins them midway through the song. Oddly, it's one of the few performances tonight that has some energy.

9:19 PM ET

Solange, Lyfe Jennings and Kirk Franklin. They're presenting Favorite Contemporary Artist. And the American Music Award goes to Daughtry.

9:26 PM ET

Kimmel announces Josh Groban, who in turn introduces a performance by Celine Dion.

9:31 PM ET

Lenny Kravitz follows Celine with another performance.

9:36 PM ET

Natasha Bedingfield and Sean Kingston are presenting Favorite Soul/R&B Album. And the American Music Award goes to Justin Timberlake for FutureSex/LoveSounds. We again get his thanks by tape.

9:44 PM ET

Jennie Garth, Mel B. and Helio Castroneves take to the stage to introduce a performance of "Kiss Kiss" by Chris Brown, featuring T-Pain.

9:48 PM ET

Miley Cyrus is here to present the T-Mobile Text-In Award. And the American Music Award goes to Carrie Underwood. "This is a great night!"

9:55 PM ET

Jimmy Kimmel says his son would like to lose his virginity to the next presenters, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens. I'm sure Disney's loving that. Anyhoo, they're presenting Favorite Pop/Rock Album to Daughtry for Daughtry, their third time up on the stage.

9:58 PM ET

Blair Underwood inros a performance by Alicia Keys, whose new album drops at #1 this week. See, I said "drops", 'cause I know the lingo.

10:07 PM ET

Less than an hour to go. He hits on Beyoncé, then introduces Tony Hawk. Tony then intros a performance by Duran Duran. They lead off with the Timberlake-produced new single "Falling Down" followed by "Hungry Like A Wolf".

10:15 PM ET

Slash and Scott Weiland are presenting Favorite Country Album to Carrie Underwood for Some Hearts. Carrie says its "one heckuva night."

10:17 PM ET

Usher comes out and begins by paying his condolences to Kanye West for the death of his mother. He then presents the International Artist Award to Beyoncé Knowles, who seems moved by the honor.

10:27 PM ET

Kimmel introduces Snoop Dogg who in turn presents a performance by Mary J. Blige.

10:32 PM ET

Kid Rock asks for an ovation for the members of the armed forces then presents Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Band, Duo or Group to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

10:39 PM ET

Amanda Bynes introduces a performance by her Hairspray co-star, Queen Latifah. Her gospel infused performance gets an ovation.

10:43 PM ET

Akon is presenting Soul/R&B Female. And the American Music Award goes to Rihanna.

10:49 PM ET

Kimmel introduces a performance by the winners of three AMA's tonight, Daughtry.

10:54 PM ET

The night's final presenter is KISS' Gene Simmons. He's presenting Favorite Pop/Rock Female. And the American Music Award goes to Fergie, who seems shocked by the win. "It isn't about one artist, it's about your team!"

10:56 PM ET

Jimmy thanks Promise Rehab for letting so many of the artists out tonight and then says goodnight.
