The nominations for the awards were announced on July 16th, 2009. The Creative Arts ceremony, hosted by Kathy Griffin, handed out some of the awards on September 12th, while the main ceremony, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, airs tonight, September 20th, 2009.

8:01 PM ET

Emmy host Neil Patrick Harris takes to the stage with a song about why you should put down the remote and stick with tonight's telecast. "We're already running 27 minutes late...how did that happen?"

"Here's hoping Kanye West likes 30 Rock," he quips. He also adds that the evening will be split into five genres, starting with the comedy awards.

8:10 PM ET

Tonight's first presenters are Tina Fey and Jon Hamm. They're presenting Supporting Actress in a Comedy. And the Emmy goes to Kristin Chenoweth for Pushing Daisies. "I'm unemployed now so I like Mad Men and The Office."

8:21 PM ET

Neil introduces tonight's announcer, The Daily Show's John Hodgman. Neil's How I Met Your Mother co-stars introduce the nominees for the next category, which has multiple 30 Rock nominees. Matt Hubbard wins for the 30 Rock episode "Reunion".

8:24 PM ET

Julia Louis Dreyfus and Amy Poehler present the next category, Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Jon Cryer for Two and a Half Men. He thanks his old agents, who got him the job, and his new agents, as well as series star Charlie Sheen.

8:33 PM ET

Neil laments that he just lost the previous category. He then introduces the next presenter, Justin Timberlake. He's presenting Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Toni Collette for the United States of Tara. "Wow this is insanely confronting!"

Neil takes us back to the press room where he interrogates Jon Cryer about the win in the category they shared.

Gossip Girl's Blake Lively and Leighton Meester announce the winners for the Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series awards that were handed out last week. The winners were Tina Fey and Justin Timberlake, both for SNL.

They then present Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series. The winner is The Office's Jeff Blitz.

8:48 PM ET

NPH introduces Rob Lowe. He mentions how he chose Doctor Vegas over Grey's Anatomy. He then presents Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock. "I'd trade this to look like him," says Baldwin, pointing to Lowe. He dedicates his win to Lorne Michaels.

NPH intros a clip from Family Guy where Stewie beats Brian when he says he's thinking of voting for How I Met Your Mother.

Neil introduces tonight's next genre, Reality, or as I like to call it, the decline of Western Civilization.

Maks and Karina from Dancing with the Stars do a dance number. The couple recently cancelled their engagement.

Jon Cryer and Hayden Panettiere introduce the nominees for Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program. And the Emmy goes to Jeff Probst for Survivor. He says he's sharing the award with anyone who has a dream and goes for it.

9:06 PM ET

NPH intros Tracy Morgan. He's presenting Reality-Competition Program. And the Emmy goes to The Amazing Race. They've won for, like, 1,000 years now.

9:09 PM ET

Movies and Miniseries is our next genre.

9:12 PM ET

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick present Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. And the Emmy goes to Shohreh Aghdashloo for House of Saddam. The couple then present Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. And the Emmy goes to Ken Howard for Grey Gardens. "I'll make my speech short so that it doesn't get interrupted by a rapper or Congressman."

9:22 PM ET

Kate Walsh and Chandra Wilson have the task of presenting Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Brendan Gleeson for Into the Storm.

9:26 PM ET

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Patricia Arquette do same medium schtick before presenting Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special. And the Emmy goes to Andrew Davies for Little Dorrit. They then present Directing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special. And the Emmy goes to Dearbhla Walsh for Little Dorrit.

9:31 PM ET

NPH's Doctor Horrible character hijacks the show and announces the death of TV and the rise of the internet.

Emmy-winner Alec Baldwin takes to the stage to present Lead Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Jessica Lange for Grey Gardens.

9:42 PM ET

Kiefer Sitherland and Anna Torv have been cast as the presenters for Outstanding Made For Television Movie. And the Emmy goes to Grey Gardens. They then present Outstanding Miniseries. And the Emmy goes to Little Dorrit. Two great priductions get their due.

9:46 PM ET

Neil now introduces the night's next category genre: Variety. Yay!

The cast of Big Bang Theory are out next to present Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. The nominees give "tips" to aspiring directors. And the Emmy goes to American Idol's Brucce Gowers. Trivia: He directed Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" video!

The trio then present Writing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The accepting writer hums and haws, joking that he hasn't had anything to say since George Bush left office.

10:02 PM ET

Jimmy Fallon sings through an Autotune and when he "falls" the crowd convulses as his pain is musicalized. He presents Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics. And the Emmy goes to the opening number of the 81st Academy Awards. "I think you guys moved this award to primetime because of the sexiness of some of the nominees and you gave it to the nerdiest guys."

NPH introduces the hilarious Ricky Gervais. He's presenting Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. "A lot of people say they have the best cast and crew. They're lying."

It's time for tonight's final genre category: Drama.

LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell present Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Michael Emerson for Lost. The duo then present the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy. And the Emmy goes to 24's Cherry Jones.

Stephen Moyer and David Boreanaz announce the winners of last week's Drama Guest Actor and Actress, Michael J. Fox and Ellen Burstyn. They, in turn, present the Emmy for Directing For A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Rod Holcomb for ER.

Burstyn and Fox also present the Writing award, which goes to Mad Men's Kater Gordon and Matthew Weiner for the episode "Meditations In An Emergency."

Simon Baker presents Lead Actress In A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Glenn Close for Damages.

10:48 PM ET

Dana Delany presents the Emmy for Leading Actor in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, his second consecutive win. "Lee Trevino was struck by lightning twice and now I know how he feels. And I'm glad Glenn Close is actually a woman."

10:52 PM ET

The legendary Bob Newhart is here to present Outstanding Comedy Series. He jokes that if 30 Rock wins, Tina Fey will kiss him. If it loses, he'll continue to honor the restraining order. And the Emmy goes to 30 Rock. Fey gives Newhart his kiss. "We want to thanking NBC for keeping us on the air even though we're much more expensive than a talk show."

The always classy Sigourney Weaver is here to present Outstanding Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Mad Men.
