Dune: Prophecy – Season 1 4K review

The HBO series Dune: Prophecy takes place 10,000 years before the events of the Dune movies and traces the origins of the powerful Sisterhood through the lives of Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams). The cast also includes Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Chloe Lea, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, and Mark Strong. Warner Brothers Discovery Home Entertainment has released Dune: Prophecy – Season 1 on 4K and I had a chance to take a look. The WB likes disclaimers, so here goes: Though Warner Brothers provided me with a copy of this release to review, the thoughts and opinions below are mine.
The 2160p HEVC / H.265 encoded native/4K digital transfer with HDR10 is presented in a 2.00:1 aspect ratio. The video presentation has fine detail levels in all the usual areas (skin, textiles and environment) and deep blacks. The colour palette is subdued but even then the HDR brings out some nice highlights.
On the audio side of things, you have the choice of an English Dolby Atmos track that folds back to Dolby TrueHD 7.1, as well as French, German, Italian and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks and a Czech Dolby Digital 2.0 track. Subtitles are available for English SDH, Czech, Danish, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish. The soundscape immerses you into the life on Arrakis so well that you’ll check your shoes for sand. The low frequency elements are powerful and dialogue is always clear and prioritized.
The six episodes of season 1 are spread over 3 4K discs as are the bonus features. The longest piece clocks in over 30 minutes and looks at various aspects of the production, while the rest are shorter featurettes and “Inside the Episode” pieces.
The Dune: Prophecy – Season 1 4K provides the historical background to the Dune story. While light on bonus materials, the audio and video presentations are excellent. Recommended.
