Ford and Pfeiffer make surprise number 3

What Lies Beneath was number one at the box office this weekend pulling in an estimated $30.1 million. That makes it the third box office surprise in as many weeks.

Two weeks ago analysts thought Scary Movie would do okay, but never expected it to make The Patriot and The Perfect Storm eat its dust.

Last week, the analysts were a little closer. They thought X-Men would hit the number one spot, but their guesses were off by $20 million.

This week? Well, many of the reviews for What Lies Beneath ranged from ho-hum to humdrum. Analysts though X-Men would again take the weekend crown but that flick saw its take drop 56%.

Go figure.
