Now in its third year, the Screen Actors Guild Awards® took place on February 22, 1997 and aired live on NBC from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

A highlight for the audience were two cast reunions. Michael Cole, Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III of the Mod Squad presented the Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble of a Drama Series, while LeVar Burton, Cicely Tyson, and Edward Asner, who appeared together in Roots, presented the awards for Outstanding Performances by a Male and a Female in a movie or miniseries.

On the film side, The Birdcage took home the ensemble award, while Shine’s Geoffrey Rush and Fargo’s Frances McDormand took home individual performance awards.

On the TV side, the celebratory hardware was taken home by the casts of E.R. and Seinfeld.

Glenn Close presented the Life Achievement Award to Angela Lansbury.
