The Academy Awards returned to the Biltmore Hotel for its seventh edition. The ceremony, which took place on February 27th, 1935, was hosted by actor, author and humorist Irvin S. Cobb.

When the nominations were announced minus any nods for Bette Davis (Of Human Bondage) and Myrna Loy (The Thin Man), there was a huge public outcry and the Academy temporarily changed their rules to allow write-in candidates.

Did either of the women win? You’ll have to check our coverage of the ceremony.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • One Night of Love: 6
  • It Happened One Night: 5
  • The Gay Divorcee: 5
  • Cleopatra: 5
