Out of the Past 4K review

1947’s Out of the Past, directed by Jacques Tourneur, stars Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas. Mitchum plays Jeff Bailey, a man running a gas station in a small town and dating a sweet girl, Ann (Virginia Huston). When a man arrives to tell him that an old “friend” wants to see him, Jeff and Ann embark on a road trip. It’s during that trip that Jeff tells Ann about his checkered past, his real name, and the man they’re going to see, Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas). Throw in a femme fatale (Jame Greer), one last job to make things even, and a phone book’s worth of people you can’t trust and you’ve got Out of the Past. Warner Archive has now released a 4K restoration of the movie and thanks to them and Allied Vaughn, I had a chance to take a look. The WB likes disclaimers, so here goes: Though Warner Brothers provided me with a copy of this release to review, the thoughts and opinions below are mine.
The 2160p HEVC / H.265 encoded native 4K digital transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 is presented in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The restoration is from a 4K scan of the original nitrate camera negative and, as I’ve said repeatedly about their work, Warner Archive has done a great job here. The image is sharp with facial features, textiles and locations all showing great detail. Contrast looks great and the black levels are deep with no loss of detail in the shadows, which is an important aspect of film noir. The HDR grading gives us a very wide greyscale. There’s a fine film grain and no real sign of source damage.
On the audio side of things, we have an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track. Subtitles are available for English SDH. The mix presents dialogue, music and effects equally well and there’s no real sign of age-related pop, hiss or crackle.
The Out of the Past 4K also comes with a Blu-ray copy. There is no digital code. In terms of bonus materials, we get the previously released audio commentary from film historian James Ursini, a new introduction from TCM Noir Alley host Eddie Muller, and four vintage radio shows featuring either Robert Mitchum or Kirk Douglas. Each of those run about thirty minutes.
Warner Archive’s Out of the Past 4K brings us a classic film noir with a great cast. Add in Warner Archives great audio and video presentation and some nice extras and this release is easy to recommend.
