Independent Spirit Awards Coverage

The Independent Spirit Awards usually take place the day before the Oscars®. More and more, the performers you see strutting down the red carpet on Sunday are the same folks you see strolling down to the ISA's beachfront presentation — a fitting testimony to the continually growing importance of independent film.

The awards were founded in 1984. Then called the FINDIE ("Friends of Independents") Awards, the statue was a Plexiglas pyramid containing suspended shoestrings representing the paltry budgets of independent films. They were renamed the Independent Spirit Awards in 1986.
