49th Grammy® Awards Coverage

Welcome to DigitalHit.com's live coverage of the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.

The nominations for the Grammys were announced on December 7th, 2006, while the ceremony took place on February 11th, 2007.

8:00 PM ET

The show starts with the much anticipated reunion of The Police. They perform "Roxanne". Dunno, but it felt a little anti-climactic.

8:04 PM ET

Jamie Foxx is the night's first presenter. "When people heard the Police were opening, some were a little confused. Snoop left the building." Foxx is presenting Pop Collaboration with Vocals. And the Grammy goes to Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder. Stevie says it was great to perform the song when he was 17 and then perform it again with Tony.

8:09 PM ET

Night's off to a bit of a shaky start...didn't anyone have coffee? Joan Baez talks about the power of folk and then introduces a performance by the Dixie Chicks. They get a big reception...of course this isn't really their old country crowd.

8:18 PM ET

The Purple One, Prince, comes out and says, "One word: Beyoncé." So, really, it's only appropriate that Beyoncé should come out and sing "Listen" from Dreamgirls. It wouldn't have made sense if Donald Trump came out and warbled a ballad to Rosie.

8:21 PM ET

The Black Eyed Peas talk about Booker T. & The MG's becoming lifetime achievement honorees. They then present Best R&B album to Mary J. Blige's "The Breakthrough". She's quite moved by her first win and talks about growing into a better human being. She then begins to read either a list of thanks or the LA phone book.

8:26 PM ET

Queen Latifah talks about the contest to have an unsigned artist sing a duet with Justin Timberlake. Man, oh, man, the pacing of this show so far is terrible.

8:33 PM ET

Justin Timberlake talks about his song "What Goes Around" and then performs it.

8:38 PM ET

Pink and TI talk about The Doors becoming lifetime achievement honorees. They then present Best Female R&B Vocal performance. And the Grammy goes to Mary J. Blige. Quick hide the phonebook. "I want to use this success to build bridges, not burn them."

8:46 PM ET

Stevie Wonder introduces a performance by Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and John Mayer.

By the way, many of the awards are handed out erlier in the day. We'll have a full list of winners later tonight.

8:58 PM ET

Nelly Furtado, Natasha Bedingfield and Nicole Scherzinger are here to present Best Pop Vocal Album to John Mayer's "Continuum".

9:04 PM ET

Shakira and Wyclef John perform "Hips Don't Lie".

9:08 PM ET

Seal and Burt Bacharach pay tribute to A&M Records founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, winners of a Merit Award. They then present Song of the Year. The Dixie Chicks win for "Not Ready to Make Nice." They're joined onstage by co-writer Dan Wilson. Natalie Maines saus, "For the first time I'm speechless." A quick shot of the audience shows Reba McEntire clapping. Didn't she have a beef with the Chicks over Maines' political comments?

9:16 PM ET

The pacing of this show still hasn't gotten out of the mud. I'm still waiting for that performance that'll knock my socks off, but I don't know if it's coming.

9:18 PM ET

Alyson Hannigan and Cobey Smulders discuss lifetime achievement honorees The Grateful Dead, before introducing a performance by Gnarls Barkley.

9:23 PM ET

Common and Kanye West are presenting Best Rap Album. And the Grammy goes to Ludacris for "Release Therapy". "You mean all I had to do was cut my hair to win one of these?" He then adds, "A special shout out to Oprah and Bill O'Reilly," two people who have criticized him in the past.

9:32 PM ET

Terrence Howard talks about opera singer Maria Callas, a lifetime achievement honoree. He then inroduces a performance by Mary J. Blige.

9:38 PM ET

Mandy Moore, Leann Rimes and Luke Wilson are presenting Best Country Album. And the Grammy goes to the Dixie Chicks for "Taking the Long Way". Maines says, "To quote the great Simpsons: Ha Ha. Millions of people just turned their TVs off."

9:48 PM ET

Reba McEntire pays tribute to honorees Bob Wills and Don Henley. Carrie Underwood then performs a tribute to Wills with "San Antonio Rose" while Rascal Flatts perform The Eagle's "Hotel California". Underwood then sings "Desperado" before Rascall Flatts sing "Life in the Fast Lane" with her. Just like their version of "Life is a Highway", they're nowhere near the original.

10:00 PM ET

Natalie Cole and Ornette Coleman are out next and Natalie pays tribute to Ornette, a lifetime honoree tonight. They announce the nominees for Best New Artist. And the Grammy goes to Carrie Underwood. She pays thanks to Simon Fuller and American Idol for helping her get to where she is today.

10:07 PM ET

Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci talk about the birth of R&B and introduce performances by Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie and Chris Brown, three generations of R&B.

10:17 PM ET

Their performance seques into a performance by Christine Aguilera. She pays tribute to James Brown, singing "It's A Man's Man's Man's World".

10:25 PM ET

Grammy prez Neil Portnow talks about the importance of music education.

10:28 PM ET

It's time for the In Memoriam segment, which includes another tribute to James Brown. Brown's long-time announcer, Danny Ray, came out and put Brown's cape over a mic stand.

10:37 PM ET

Rihanna and David Spade take to the stage. Spade says, "Iman and David Bowie weren't available, so they called us." They introduce Ludacris, performing with Mary J. Blige and Earth, Wind & Fire.

10:42 PM ET

James Blunt performs, dedicating his performance to the late founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun.

10:46 PM ET

Stephen Sondheim, Estelle Axton and Cosimo Matassa are honored with Trustee Awards in a voiceover.

10:52 PM ET

Academy Award nominee Jennifer Hudson announces the winner of the contest to sing with Justin Timberlake, Robyn Trout. They start off singing "Ain't No Sunshine (When He's Gone)".

10:58 PM ET

Tony Bennett and Quentin Tarantino are presenting Record of the Year. And the Grammy goes to "Not Ready to Make Nice" by the Dixie Chicks. This must be George Bush's favourite Grammys ever!

11:08 PM ET

Chris Rock introduces a performance by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. "This band had their jocks in socks years before Justin put his #### in a box."

Nice song, but another of tonight's performances that has made the whole night feel low key. Last year the Grammys had their asses handed to them by American Idol, which nearly doubled their ratings. This telecast is almost over and it's been a huge yawn.

11:13 PM ET

Al Gore and Queen Latifah are handling the duties for Best Rock Album. And the Grammy goes to The Red Hot Chili Peppers for Stadium Arcadium.

11:23 PM ET

Musicares Person of the Year Don Henley and Scarlett Johansson are presenting Album of the Year. And the Grammy goes to..."Taking the Long Way" by the Dixie Chicks. Natalie Maines says, "I think people are using their free speech here tonight."

That's it. A great night for the Dixie Chicks.
